Introduction to Sewing

Start Thursday evening 21st October from 6pm to 9pm

This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of sewing in a hands-on learning environment. Students will complete Sewing Class 1 to 5 over the eight week program. Aspects of construction such as cutting, laying, fusing, yokes, pockets, waistbands, fastenings will be explored and you will create a fabulous range of item from a sling bag to a basic skirt and shirt. Students will use domestic Bernina/Bernette sewing machines and apply professional finishes to their garments.

You can choose from 3 tailored jacket designs for women, Vogue Pattern code V8333, V8428 and V7975. In this sewing class create a tailored fit using professional construction techniques and finishes. These will include welt pockets, collar, lapel, facing and linings. Introductory to Embroidery & Beading Techniques
Saturday 22 May 2010 10am – 4pm
This weekend workshop offers a fun and relaxed environment where you learn the basics & explore a range of introductory embroidery stitches and beading techniques as used in haute couture fashion and antique clothing. Traditional stitching methods are applied to basic samples, then latest textile trends provide inspiration for an embellishment design exercise. Resources include garments from The Darnell Collection and contemporary fashion forecast information to demonstrate the potential of the techniques and current uses by designers.

Fascinator Workshop
Saturday 5th June from 10pm to 4pm

We have a few places still available for this exciting workshop, Catherine will demonstrate how to create a base shape using the sinamay and a basic wooden block and millinery wire.
Using some vintage hats and headpieces as inspiration we will use a modern millinery product Sinamay to interpret a contemporary design. You will create a wonderful headpiece and also learn some delightful ways to master the use of sinamay as a trim. You will also learn a few techniques with feathers to add panache to your headpiece.

Learn about which hats will suit your unique face shape and uncover some of the mysteries of millinery using traditional wooden millinery blocks at this one day workshop. Students are welcome to bring along with them a special brooches or exquisite feathers that can be incorporate into their fascinator. To be held at The Sewing Room on Saturday 5th June from 10pm to 4pm.

Silk Rose Workshop
Thursday 3rd June from 10am to 2pm

My Mother had spoken of this technique as she had seen it as a child and was fasinated by the brass flower tools that formed the petals so when Catherine Kelly told me about it. I asked if she could delivery a class at The Sewing Room. You will be delighted with the beautiful silk flower you will create using traditional brass flower tools. You will learn about suitable fabric choice, methods of stiffening fabric, traditional tooling techniques and assembly of flowers. This workshop will be held at The Sewing Room on Thursday 3rd June from 10am to 2pm.

Isn’t Jamilah just gorgeous in this little wool appliquéd dress? I dragged her out side in the drizzling rain to take this photo and true to her gorgeous nature she simply smiled.

 This simple dress is made from a piece of woollen fabric I picked up in St Vincent de Paul shop at Northbridge; it was quit old as the measurements on the remnant tag were in inches and there were a few moths holes I had to cut around.

I am ‘The Green Queen’. I love to recycle and reuse where ever I can. I find St Vincent de Paul a great place to pick up embroidery threads, knitting needle, beads, old dollies, woollen blankets (remind me to tell you about these later) and preloved clothes ready to transform into something wonderful and new in my wardrobe.

The appliqué is all 100% wool woven or felted fabric and was attached to the dress with double sided fussing before I embroidered around the leaves and  flowers with a little help from my Mum, the Embroidery Queen.

Well this transformation will be added to Jamilah’s wardrobe shortly. Sew join us at the Sewing Room to make your previous wee borns (translation: little children, my sister in law from Scotland has been stay with us for a few weeks and I had to throw in one of her expressions) a new outfit they will love because you have toiled over it especially for them. They will wear it with pride and tell everyone, “My Mum made this for me”. As I type this I can hear myself as a child saying the same thing when I wore one of the amazing creations my Mum made me.

 

I love the sixties. This dress is inspired by the dresses worn around 1968. The style is pure Jackie Kennedy. I found this divine fabric on one of my many fabric shops adventurous from Tessuti in Commonwealth Street Surry Hills. It is called Blumarine Check and is a 100% wool woven fabric construction. The bead trim around the neckline and hemline is from my stash of remnants.

The beads are all stitched to cotton tape and you attach them the same way you would insert a piping. This dress is cut from a vintage pattern that I have modified slightly.

Jackie Kennedy set the Fashion trend for sleeveless dresses when they were unheard of. The 1960s opened up a world of opportunity, women were bold enough to wear shifts out in public. With matching bright stockings, no less! I think I will need to find some bright pink or orange stockings for this one. The look was bold, daring and adventurous – how 60’s I love it.

Sewing Class 1: The Machine & Basic Functions

For those who are completely new to sewing. This class will be led in a simple and easy to follow format. First you will be acquainted with the sewing machine, and its features, dials and buttons. You will learn to confidently set up the machine for sewing – how to insert a needle, thread the machine, and wind and load a bobbin. You will also be introduced to the different stitches and their application for different fabric types. In the second half of class you will make your own sewing satchel, whilst learning handy construction tips.
