Step aside proud Mother coming through……

leave a comment

IMG_3049We are all proud of the clever things our offspring do………..so when I suggested to Andrew if he would like to learn to screenprint, I would love to show him how, he said ‘yes’. I was so excited to come home to an amazing drawing of a fox. After explaining the idea that each shape had to be fully enclosed so you can cut the design out of paper, a few day later he had scaled the drawing up to A3 and cut the design out of paper ready to print onto the linen fabric. One quiet Saturday afternoon we printed the fabulous Mr Fox in blue onto our fabric. The first few were a little fuzzy on the edges but after a few practice goes, getting the angle and presser right with the squeege he was off and racing. Andrew’s design was a two colour print so after the blue was dry, we set up a sheet of clear plastic to help us line up the black eyes in the right place before printing.

A visit to the fabulous patchwork store in Mornington called Treehouse Textile http://www.treehousetextiles.com.au/. They carry beautiful fabrics and accessaries. The lovely lady who owns the store found the perfect fabric to back Andrew’s cushions. The next step in Andrew’s screenprinting journey was for him to sew the cushions together.I was very impressed with his sewing machine skills and even more impressed with the 12 beautiful buttonholes he created, three on each of his four beautiful cushions. Step aside very proud Mother coming through…..

Sweet memories come back to me………

Of an island holiday in Hawaii in October for Oliver’s 21st.

Have inspired me to create a beach theme in Andrew’s bedroom. These retro cushions made from fabric bought online from a fabulous store called Retro Connects are pretty cool with their gorgeous ladies and old wagons, perfect for a teenage boy. https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/retroconnections.

This cool blue  van painting in acrylics on a 1m x 1m canvas is a focus for the room. The bright crochet rugs took a while but was a fun way to learn to crochet and made for Andrew last Christmas. I like the eclectic feel his room has now and hope it inspires him.

Teen Sewing Class The Sewing Room4

We refashion all sorts of things at this class, students brought with them everything from skirts, dresses, a pair of jeans to a denim jacket. Armed with a pair of scissors and loads of confidence we cut inches of fabric off hems, made garments smaller, shortened straps, unpicked waisted bands and even used the cheese grater to make the denim look woren on the demin jacket.

Tessa cut about 10cm of this demin jacket and frayed the edge with a comb. Then cheese grated the sleeves and back to give a more lived in look to her denim jacket, before appliqueing these gorgeous little birds on the back and sewing on beads for their eyes.

Claudia's gorgeous tshirt design Teen Sewing Class The Sewing Room

This was so much fun, I enjoyed it as much as the young ladies who came to the Chic T-shirt Manipulation class. In this workshop we explored appliqué, pintucking & ruching, modern day smocking & shirring. Armed with a pair of scissors and loads of confidence we cut, folded, sewed and appliqued our way to a whole new level of everyday chic with some fantastic results as you can see.Claudia reshaped her t-shirt by opening up the neck and chopping off the long sleeves from her white t-shirt. She sewed, gathered, ruched these gorgeous circular designs and applied them to her t-shirt adding buttons and beads to the circles. Georgie's gorgeous tshirt design Teen Sewing Class The Sewing Room

Georgie Teen Sewing Class Cutting Fabric The Sewing Room

‘Like ducks to water’, the teenagers who attended the Sewing Room’s holiday program on Tuesday afternoon created amazing sling bags. Our Teens Sewing Classes are a fantastic way start the exciting journey of learning to sew. Young sewers receive lots of individual attention to give them the confidence to go on to create beautiful things. Jamie and Lucy both in Year 6 were completely new to sewing. We acquainted them with sewing machine and its features, dials and buttons. And they were off completely confident to create their own sling bag.

Lucy Teen Sewing Class The Sewing Room

Lucy’s attention to detail was fantastic and her Japanese inspired bag was simply beautiful. Georgie Teen Sewing Class The Sewing Room

All they need to bring was 1.5 meters of woven fabric or 75cm of two different fabrics if they wanted a contrast between the outside and inside of the bag, matching thread and 1 button about 2cm in diameter. Georgie made her bag in this pretty bright pink spot and when she was finished was as pleased as punch as her abilities to create beautiful things. It wont be to long before you see her at Paddington Markets selling her amazing creations.
Jamie Teen Sewing Class The Sewing Room

As you can see we have lots of fun at The Sewing Room by the smile on Jamie’s face.

All sewing equipment and materials was supplied so all you have to do is turn up and have fun.

Even the boys got involved with this scare monster. The colours were all chosen by Andrew. The colour combination looks fantastic in this quite complicated design but the finished T-shirt looked amazing and was properly worn home.
